We eagerly await the sun, welcoming its warmth with open arms. It's a symbol of vacations, relaxation, and much-needed rest. But don't be fooled – when it comes to your precious strands, the sun isn't always your best friend. Equip yourself with the right knowledge and products to ensure both you and your hair have the best possible vacation experience.
Sun protection involves the skin but also the hair. Due to the sun, hair fibers can become dry, discolored, and your hair can be more fragile, brittle, and dull after sun-filled vacations. For colored hair, it can be a real disaster, leading to "hair loss." Faced with this problem, several brands have developed adapted hair care products. However, you can also create your own low-cost sun protection compositions. To have amazing hair for the summer, you'll need to protect your hair from the sun, as well as the pool and the sea.
Before going to the sea or the pool:
- Opt for a cap or a hat; the goal is to prevent the sun from hitting your hair all day long. A cap doesn't mean "anti-glamour"; there are thousands of models, so you're sure to find a hat that suits you and combines utility with aesthetics.
- Hydrate as much as possible with your usual hair care cream for relaxed hair.
- Hydrate as much as possible with a mister containing water and sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, or grapeseed oil, for example, for natural kinky hair.
- If possible, opt for a protective hairstyle, such as braids or twists, to avoid manipulating them.
- For relaxed hair: Apply a non-greasy spray that offers optimal fiber protection while being light and non-sticky. They can be applied to damp or dry hair, without rinsing, before and during exposure.
After the sea or the pool:
- First, rinse your hair with water, then shampoo to remove all traces of seawater from your hair. Natural or not, if you normally follow the no-poo method (the technique of washing hair with conditioner to minimize damage), still use shampoo to avoid chlorine residues in your hair, which could lead to dryness and dullness. Chlorine prevents bacteria proliferation in the pool, so imagine what it could do to your hair?
- Use a hair mask once a week if you plan to go to the pool, sea, etc. Prioritize masks with as many moisturizing active ingredients as possible, for example: shea butter, sweet almond oil, or olive oil.
Now, enjoy your vacation and look your best when you go for a swim.
